Seizure of more than 1,500 kg of cocaine off the coast of the Canary Islands

Nearly 1,500 kilograms of cocaine were seized on Wednesday January 17 off the coast of the Canary Islands, the Spanish authorities announced on Sunday, mentioning the valuable contribution and role of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST, Moroccan internal intelligence) chaired by Abdellatif Hammouchi, in this operation. The three members of the crew involved in this drug trafficking operation were arrested, explained the Spanish National Police and Civil Guard in a joint statement.

The interception of the boat used by the suspects was made possible thanks to valuable information from DGST, collected at different scales. The craft carrying the cocaine arrived on the coast of Gran Canaria, near the coast of Arinaga, on January 12, the Spanish National Police said in a note. 1,564.5 kilograms of cocaine transported in 64 bales were seized, before being transported to the port of La Luz, in Las Palmas.

The announcement of this seizure comes as Spanish police and customs have reported, in recent months, several seizures of large quantities of drugs. In mid-December, eleven Tonnes of cocaine imported by Albanian criminal organizations were seized in Spain during two operations.
