CAN 2025 qualifiers: Ghana eliminated while Comoros, Mali, Zambia and Zimbabwe booked their tickets on fifth day

The stakes were high in the clash between Mali and Mozambique, with the winner earning a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Morocco. Mali secured its qualification with a 1-0 victory, thanks to Kamory Doumbia’s decisive goal in the 19th minute, set up by an excellent assist from Yves Bissouma.

Doumbia’s strike proved enough to seal Mali’s place in the tournament, leaving Mozambique in a must-win situation against Guinea-Bissau on the final matchday. Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, managed a 1-1 draw with Eswatini to keep their hopes alive.

Zambia, the 2012 African champions, also punched their ticket to Morocco with a 1-0 win over reigning champions Côte d’Ivoire. Kennedy Musonda scored the crucial goal just before halftime (43rd), ensuring Zambia’s return to Africa’s premier football competition.

Zimbabwe secured their spot with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Kenya. Tawanda Maswanhise opened the scoring for Zimbabwe in the 32nd minute, but Kenya’s Jonah Ayunga equalized early in the second half (52nd). This marks a triumphant return for Zimbabwe, whose football federation had been suspended by FIFA during the previous qualifiers. They will join Cameroon, another qualifier from Group J, in Morocco.

Comoros delivered a dramatic 2-1 victory over Gambia at the municipal stadium in Berkane, Morocco, to confirm their place in the tournament. Gambia struck first through Alassana Jatta in the 18th minute, but Rafiki Said leveled the score just seven minutes later. Myziane Maolida sealed the win for Comoros with a decisive goal in the 90th minute.

Ghana’s path to qualification remains uncertain after a 1-1 draw with Angola. Despite Jordan Ayew giving Ghana the lead, Angola’s Zini equalized in the second half, leaving the Black Stars mourning. They won’t take part in the next Africa Cup of Nations.
