UN warns of looming catastrophe as Sudanese return amid famine and refugee crisis

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is urgently appealing for international aid as more than 1.3 million displaced Sudanese return to war-ravaged areas like Khartoum, Gezira, and Sennar.
While their homecoming signals hope, it comes amid worsening humanitarian crises in Sudan and neighboring Uganda, because many are returning to ruins, said Mamadou Dian Balde, UNHCR’s regional director. In Al Fashir, North Darfur, nearly 900,000 civilians are trapped under a 14-month siege by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), facing starvation and daily shelling. Aid convoys have been blocked or attacked, and community kitchens now serve highly nutritious porridge to malnourished residents, many of whom are children. “There is a famine of the first degree in al Fashir. All the basic necessities for life are not available,” said Mohamed al Doma, a local aid organizer who fled the city.
