Robert Mugabe Jr, the 33-year-old son of Zimbabwe’s late former President Mugabe, appeared before a Harare magistrates court on Thursday, 2 October 2025, on drug possession charges.
He was arrested on Wednesday morning for driving the wrong way on a one-way street, during which police allegedly found two sachets of cannabis in a sling bag he was carrying.
Authorities also arrested five other individuals described as part of a “syndicate linked to him,” with 25 sachets of marijuana and six ecstasy pills reportedly seized. Mugabe Jr’s lawyer, Ashiel Mugiya, has contested the charges, claiming the drugs were found in a car with three other occupants and disputed the police’s reported quantity of cannabis. He has been remanded in custody pending a bail ruling on Friday.
This is not Mugabe Jr’s first encounter with the law. In 2023, he was arrested for allegedly damaging property and spitting on a police officer at a party, later settling the case out of court. His father, Robert Mugabe Sr, ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years until his resignation in 2017 and died in 2019. Once at odds with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe Jr has since reconciled with the ruling Zanu-PF, attending a party rally in 2022 where he was welcomed back into the fold. Police say investigations into the alleged drug syndicate are ongoing.
