Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya made a rare public appearance on Tuesday, 07 October 2025, addressing a large rally in the northern town of Maroua as he seeks an eighth consecutive term in office.
Speaking to supporters in one of the country’s poorest and most restive regions, Biya pledged to tackle insecurity, reduce youth unemployment, and improve infrastructure if re-elected in Sunday’s vote. The Far North, heavily affected by Boko Haram attacks, holds nearly 20% of the nation’s 8.2 million eligible voters, making it a crucial battleground where two of Biya’s former allies are also competing. “I am well aware of the problems that concern you,” Biya told the crowd, assuring them that the challenges were surmountable.
The rally marked Biya’s first major campaign event after returning from a weeklong private stay in Switzerland.
