Angola’s Head of state, João Lourenço, has arrived on Wednesday, 3 December, in Washington, D.C., at the invitation of the U.S. Administration to witness the formal signing of a peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
The ceremony—expected to involve the Presidents of both countries—will take place at the headquarters of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). His presence, as the current Chair of the African Union (AU), seeks to reinforce Angola’s role as a key mediator and to lend continental credibility to the peace process.
The accord builds on a prior agreement signed in June 2025 by the foreign ministers of both nations, under U.S. mediation. It aims to bring stability to the war-torn eastern region of the DRC by addressing troop withdrawals, territorial integrity and broader security commitments. Observers frame the signing as a pivotal step toward peace, even as challenges remain around implementation and the concerns of regional stakeholders.
