Ghana has made an additional 700 million US dollars in Eurobond repayments, bringing its total repayments to 2.1 billion US dollars under the country’s Eurobond Debt Exchange Programme, the Ministry of Finance announced on Monday, July 6.

The latest payment comprises 525.2 million US dollars in principal repayments and 174.8 million US dollars in interest payments.

The ministry said the repayment formed part of the government’s financing strategy to avoid placing excessive pressure on Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves. It added that the payment would reduce the country’s outstanding Eurobond debt, strengthen investor confidence and demonstrate the government’s commitment to prudent debt management and macroeconomic stability.

The repayment follows an agreement reached in October 2024, when Ghana and its international bondholders agreed in principle to exchange at least 13 billion US dollars in outstanding Eurobond debt for new government bonds as part of efforts to address the country’s debt crisis and restore economic stability.
