At least 12 people have been killed and 44 others injured in a fatal road crash involving a passenger bus, a cargo truck and an empty fuel tanker at Konongo in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when a cargo truck transporting tomatoes from Kumasi to Accra reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle on a hill.
The truck crashed head-on with a passenger bus travelling from Accra to northern Ghana, before an empty fuel tanker collided with the crash scene. GNFS Public Relations Officer Alex King Nartey said the fatalities comprised nine males and three females, while 44 people sustained injuries, including 30 who suffered critical injuries.
Emergency response teams, including the GNFS and other agencies, conducted rescue operations, freed trapped victims and secured the area to allow for the evacuation of casualties and the restoration of traffic flow.
