At least four people have died after a heavy rainstorm caused widespread destruction in Sokoto State, northern Nigeria, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.
A NEMA official, Tukur Abubakar, said the storm affected several communities, destroying homes and damaging public infrastructure, including a primary school and a hospital in Kware Local Government Area.
Hundreds of households have been affected in recent days, with several people sustaining injuries. NEMA said it has conducted an assessment to determine the extent of the damage and the urgent humanitarian needs of affected residents.
Nigeria’s rainy season usually lasts about six months, with rainfall becoming more intense from mid-May. Experts have linked the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events in the country to the effects of climate change.
