Several political opposition figures in Chad have benefited from presidential pardon measures, to the satisfaction of the “United Nations System in Chad,” which described the initiative as a “positive signal” for strengthening trust among the country’s national actors.
In a statement published this Sunday on its UN Chad Facebook page, the United Nations (UN) also considers that the decision by the Chadian authorities “can contribute to creating an environment conducive to dialogue, appeasement, and social cohesion.”
The UN encouraged N’Djamena to maintain “this momentum through initiatives promoting inclusive dialogue and the participation of all segments of Chadian society in public life, while respecting the rule of law and human rights.”
-Declaring itself “faithful to its mandate,” the United Nations representative in Chad reiterated an unwavering commitment to support the efforts of national authorities and all stakeholders. The representative emphasized prioritizing dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual trust to guarantee peace, stability, and sustainable development in Chad.
As a reminder, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno signed a decree on August 14 granting a presidential pardon to nine opponents. These include former Prime Minister Succès Masra, leader of the “Les Transformateurs” party, and eight members of the Political Actors Consultation Group (GCAP).
