Malawi’s Renewed Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity and Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara

On Monday in Rabat, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, Mrs. Nancy Tembo, reiterated her country’s unwavering support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco. This position was expressed through a joint statement issued at the end of a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his Malawian counterpart.
According to the statement, Lilongwe supports the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and endorses the efforts of the United Nations as the exclusive framework to achieve a realistic, practical, and lasting political solution to the Sahara dispute. Malawi also reaffirms its constant support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by the Kingdom of Morocco as the sole credible and realistic solution to resolving this dispute.
During her official visit to Morocco from December 17 to 21 for the inauguration of her country’s embassy in Rabat and the operationalization of its consulate general in Laâyoune, the head of Malawi’s diplomacy announced that she would be visiting the southern provinces. This visit provides an opportunity to observe the economic and social development as well as the ongoing political and democratic dynamics in the region.
This visit will also be an opportunity to explore the progress made in implementing the New Development Model for the Southern Provinces, launched in 2015 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
