Cape Verde is bolstering the investigative capacity of its judicial and scientific Police through a training program to the benefit of inspectors, security guards, and laboratory technicians, to enable them address increasingly “sophisticated and modern” forms of crime, announced the Minister of Justice on September 30.
Speaking to the press before the launch of the six-month long training program, Minister Joana Rosa emphasized that this initiative is part of the Government’s broader strategy to combat crime. It aims to target cybercrime and financial crime, while still addressing urban crime and crimes against vulnerable groups such as children and women.
“Crime knows no borders, and we need a highly capable and well-trained Criminal Investigation Police, with more staff. Today marks an important step with the training of 74 new members, including inspectors, security guards, and laboratory technicians,” Rosa stated.
The minister underscored the Government’s commitment to providing the scientific police with better working conditions and focusing on criminal investigations, supporting the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and promoting a secure and just environment.
The Government’s Program for institutional strengthening of the Criminal Investigation Police and enhancement of laboratory capabilities is being fulfilled, the minister said.
While acknowledging that the Judicial Police has been performing its duties effectively, the minister expressed confidence that the addition of these new staff members will further improve its ability to carry out investigations, provide prompt responses, and ensure social peace.
