Nigerian singer Tems triumphed on February 3 over other notable African artists, including Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, to claim the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance with her hit song Love Me Jeje.
The category, introduced just two years ago, was seen as a vital recognition of African artists’ growing influence on the global music scene. Tems, in her emotional acceptance speech, shared that her heart was “beating so fast” as she took to the stage to receive the honour. This year’s Grammy victory was particularly significant as she became the first Nigerian to win two Grammy Awards after her success in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance on Future’s Wait For U.
The moment was made all the more special as Tems dedicated her win to her mother, whose birthday fell the following day. She thanked her for all her support, visibly moved as she gestured to her mother in the audience. Love Me Jeje, which features a sample from Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic, has become a major hit, racking up over 125 million streams on Spotify and 21 million views on YouTube. Despite the excitement surrounding her victory, the Grammy category sparked some controversy, as US R&B artist Chris Brown, who features African artists in his work, was nominated for his song Sensational, which blends Afrobeats elements.
Tems’ career began in 2018 with her debut single Mr Rebel, but it was her 2019 hit Try Me that brought her widespread attention. She further elevated her international profile by featuring on Wizkid’s Essence, a track that earned her several award nominations, including a Grammy. In addition to her Grammy wins, Tems has received multiple accolades, including NAACP Image Awards, BET Awards, and a Soul Train Music Award. Her success, which continues to soar, was also acknowledged by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who praised her for bringing “pride” to the country once again.
