IMF in Discussions with Senegal Over Debt and Deficit Misreporting

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is actively engaging with the Senegalese Government after an audit revealed discrepancies in the country’s reported debt and deficit figures. The audit, conducted by the Senegalese Court of Auditors, uncovered that the figures were significantly higher than those previously disclosed by the former Administration. As a result, the IMF suspended its financing programme with Senegal, prompting further scrutiny.

Julie Kozack, an IMF spokesperson, stated on February 6 that the final report from Senegal’s Court of Auditors is expected to be released this month. In the meantime, IMF staff are working closely with Senegalese authorities to assess their capacity-building needs and to implement necessary corrective measures. The IMF’s involvement aims to help Senegal address the financial irregularities and restore the country’s fiscal stability.

This development has added pressure on the Senegalese government to address the discrepancies and take appropriate actions to manage its fiscal affairs. The IMF’s support is crucial in assisting Senegal to navigate this challenge and strengthen its economic governance moving forward.
