Kenya Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, Royal Atlantic Initiative

Kenya described autonomy under Morocco’s sovereignty as the only solution to the Sahara conflict and backed the Kingdom’s plan to offer its infrastructure and ports to help landlocked Sahel states access global trade.

This came in a joint statement issued after talks between Kenyan foreign minister Musalia Mudavadi and his Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita in Rabat on Monday.

Kenya considers “the autonomy plan as the only sustainable approach for the resolution of the Sahara issue and intends to cooperate with like-minded states to promote its implementation,” the joint statement said.

Kenya welcomes “the growing international consensus and the momentum led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in favor of the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco as the only credible and realistic solution to resolve the dispute over the Sahara,” the statement said.

Both Kenya and Morocco emphasized “the exclusivity of the United Nations in the political process and reaffirmed their support for the United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 (2024).”

Mudavadi also expressed support to the Royal initiative to promote regional integration and facilitate the access of Sahel states to the Atlantic Ocean.
