Egypt, Spain Deepen Diplomatic Alignment Amid Rising Regional Tensions

In a demonstration of deepening diplomatic synchronization, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez held a pivotal phone call on Tuesday, May 27, reaffirming their shared vision for bolstering strategic cooperation across key sectors.

The exchange, according to Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy, follows the positive momentum initiated by President El Sisi’s state visit to Madrid in February 2025, and signals both nations’ intent to consolidate bilateral ties beyond trade and investment, with a keen eye on joint geopolitical influence.

Beyond economic issues, the two leaders discussed ways of coordinating foreign policy positioning amid mounting regional instability. Both Egypt and Spain expressed unequivocal opposition to the continued Israeli military campaign in Gaza and any measures that could lead to the displacement of Palestinians. The leaders issued a joint call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, unfettered humanitarian access, and reinvigorated efforts towards a two-state solution, including broader international recognition of Palestinian statehood — a position that reflects both countries’ commitment to principled diplomacy and regional equity.

The dialogue also extended to other flashpoints in the Arab world, with President El Sisi and Prime Minister Sánchez exchanging strategic assessments on the crises in Syria, Lebanon, and Libya. The leaders underscored the critical importance of preserving sovereignty and stability in these nations while reaffirming their commitment to proactive diplomatic engagement.
