In a show of swift executive response and empathy, President Bola Tinubu has approved on June 4 the disbursement of ₦2 billion for the immediate reconstruction of homes devastated by the recent flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State.
The announcement was made by Vice-President Kashim Shettima during his visit to the flood-ravaged community on Wednesday, where he conveyed the President’s solidarity with the affected people and outlined a multi-agency intervention strategy.
Vice-President Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing all concerns raised by residents, including damaged infrastructure and loss of livelihoods. He disclosed that the President has instructed the Ministers of State for Environment and Agriculture to temporarily relocate to Niger State to implement urgent drainage and ecological interventions under the ACRSAL Project. Additionally, 20 trucks of food supplies have been approved for distribution, in coordination with local leadership, to ensure aid reaches genuine victims.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba appealed for accelerated Federal assistance, revealing that over 2,000 homes were destroyed, and four collapsed bridges have disrupted social and economic activity, especially in areas like Rabba. Traditional leaders, including the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, and the Ndalile of Mokwa, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, called for urgent attention to abandoned road projects and ecological threats exacerbated by the disaster. The visit and swift interventions signal a coordinated effort by both federal and state authorities to restore stability, rebuild affected infrastructure, and prevent future vulnerabilities.
