Tanzania and Mozambique Pledge Stronger Ties as Hassan Marks 50 Years of Mozambican Independence

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reaffirmed her nation’s unwavering commitment to deepening cooperation with Mozambique in the pursuit of sustainable development, regional cohesion, and the well-being of their peoples.
Her remarks came during a State visit to Mozambique, where she joined thousands at Machava Stadium in Maputo to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence. The occasion offered a poignant moment to reflect on the shared history and mutual aspirations of the two neighbouring nations.
President Hassan paid tribute to the enduring liberation-era bonds between Tanzania and Mozambique, recalling how Tanzania, even amid its own socio-economic and security constraints, offered crucial support to Mozambique’s struggle for independence. She emphasised that these ties, forged in the crucible of African resistance movements, now form the bedrock of their modern diplomatic and developmental collaboration. Her speech was met with resounding applause, underscoring the emotional and political resonance of the historic partnership.
Hassan further lauded Mozambique’s notable progress over the past five decades in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, crediting the nation’s inclusive governance for nurturing hope and resilience. As a practical step toward bolstering bilateral economic integration, she announced that Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) will soon inaugurate direct flight services between the two countries. This move, she noted, will not only foster trade and tourism but also symbolise a new chapter of strategic cooperation in the Southern African region.
