Morocco qualified for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 quarterfinals on Saturday night after it edged Senegal 1-0 at the Stade Olympique in Rabat.
Moroccan midfielder Yasmin Mrabet scored the only goal of the match in first-half stoppage time, converting a penalty in the 45+2 minute after a Senegalese defensive misstep inside the box. The goal was enough to seal all three points for the host nation, who finished top of Group A with 7 points.
Senegal pressed hard for an equalizer in the second half, launching multiple attacks led by Nguenar Ndiaye and Korka Fall. However, Morocco’s goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi stood firm, making key saves to keep the North Africans in front.
Morocco’s defensive line, marshalled by Zineb Redouani and Nouhaila Benzina, remained resolute under pressure, while tactical changes by coach Reynald Pedros helped contain Senegal’s late surge.
With this victory, Morocco top their group and book their place in the knockout stages, continuing their impressive form on home soil. The win also reinforces the team’s growing reputation as a WAFCON contender, especially after reaching the final in 2022.
