At least 16 people have died and 51 others sustained injuries in a tragic collision between a long-distance passenger bus and a dump truck in Ivory Coast, according to the country’s Transportation Ministry.
The fatal crash occurred on Sunday, July 27, evening as the bus travelled from San Pedro, in the southwest, en route to Burkina Faso. All the injured were taken to a regional Hospital, while the authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.
Ivory Coast continues to grapple with alarming road safety challenges, recording one of the world’s highest road fatality rates—estimated at 21 deaths per 100,000 people. Government data indicates that over 1,000 road users die annually in traffic-related incidents. The latest crash adds to a string of recent tragedies, including a collision last December that claimed 26 lives and injured 28 others.
