IMF Launches Internal Probe into Senegal’s “Hidden Debt” Case to Strengthen Data Integrity Controls

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has initiated an internal investigation into the “hidden debt” affair that has raised serious concerns in Senegal.
The institution’s Communications Department confirmed the development on Thursday, December 4. Julie Kozack, cited by Reuters, said the probe aims to determine how the irregularities went undetected and to reinforce the Fund’s internal safeguards. She noted that the review will focus on the IMF’s data-integrity frameworks, with the objective of strengthening existing control mechanisms, improving the organisation’s capacity to detect anomalies, and enhancing staff training.
Kozack added that although Senegal faces vulnerabilities linked to its debt levels, the decision on whether to undertake a partial debt restructuring rests solely with the national authorities.
