Niger announced on 25 December a sweeping ban on the issuance of visas to United States citizens, marking a retaliatory response to Washington’s decision to restrict entry for Nigerien nationals. The Niger News Agency (ANP) reported that the measures have already taken effect and include an indefinite prohibition on US citizens entering Niger.
A Nigerien diplomatic source said the action is grounded in the principle of reciprocity, framed as a sovereign assertion and a recalibration of Niamey’s foreign policy posture. The move follows a proclamation signed by US President Donald Trump on December 16, expanding full or partial entry restrictions to nationals of around 40 countries, with the policy scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026. Niger is among those facing full restrictions.
The development underscores rising diplomatic friction between Niamey and Washington, as Niger signals a firmer, more autonomous stance in managing its international engagements.
