Nigerian Troops Foil Pirate Attack, Rescue 18 Passengers on Cameroon Route

At least 18 passengers travelling by boat to Cameroon were rescued on Monday after suspected sea pirates hijacked their vessel along the Calabar–Cameroon waterways. The Nigerian Army said troops from the 13 Brigade swiftly responded to a distress call following the attack near Kombo, a fishing port in Cameroonian waters.

According to the army, the pirates, operating in two speedboats and a wooden craft, intercepted the commercial boat and abducted the passengers. A pursuit by Nigerian troops led to a brief gunfight, during which one of the pirates’ speedboats capsized. The attackers subsequently abandoned the victims and fled into nearby creeks. All passengers were rescued unharmed.
