On April 7, 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled the 2025 National Health Facility Survey (NHFS), revealing notable improvements in healthcare delivery alongside persistent structural gaps.
According to the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziak Salako, the survey provides critical insights into maternal and reproductive health services across the country. It shows that family planning and counselling services are widely available, while vaccination services are broadly accessible in many health facilities.
The report indicates that about 70 per cent of public health facilities offer delivery services, with growth monitoring for children also widely available—signalling progress in maternal and child healthcare. However, availability of vaccines under the National Immunization Programme stands at around 50 per cent of assessed facilities, pointing to areas needing improvement.
To address these gaps, the government is prioritizing increased domestic funding, including efforts to raise the Basic Health Care Provision Fund from one per cent to two per cent of consolidated revenue. Plans are also underway to expand health insurance coverage and attract more private sector investment into the health system.
The administration is also advancing digital health solutions to enhance service delivery, enabling remote consultations and improved patient monitoring across distances.
The Statistician-General of the Federation and CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Adeyemi Adeniran, noted that the survey data will guide evidence-based policymaking by identifying strengths and weaknesses within the healthcare system.
Conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, with support from the World Bank, the survey assessed 3,330 health facilities across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. It builds on previous surveys conducted in 2016, 2019 and 2023, offering a longitudinal view of Nigeria’s healthcare progress.
