Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has announced plans to transform the country into a regional energy hub by harnessing its abundant energy resources to drive industrialization, economic diversification and regional integration.
Speaking at the Mozambique CEO Summit in Maputo on Wednesday, July 22, Chapo said the Government aims to use its energy resources to expand local production, processing, employment and competitiveness, rather than exporting raw materials.
He said Mozambique is investing in power generation, transport infrastructure and development corridors, while advancing major hydropower projects in the Zambezi Valley, including Cahora Bassa, Mphanda Nkuwa, Lupata and Boroma, with the goal of achieving universal electricity access by 2030.
The president also highlighted liquefied natural gas projects in the Rovuma Basin, including Coral Sul and Coral Norte, with a combined investment of about $50 billion, saying they would help position Mozambique as both a regional energy and digital hub.
Chapo added that the government is improving ports, logistics and cross-border trade through the Nacala, Beira and Maputo development corridors, while pledging to reduce bureaucracy, combat corruption and strengthen public institutions to improve the business environment.
