Mozambique’s Minister for Communications and Digital Transformation, Américo Muchanga, has called on Universities to play a leading role in the country’s digital transformation efforts and strengthen protection against cyberattacks.
The minister made the call during the inauguration of a new data centre at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) on Monday, August 3 in Maputo, where he stressed the need to build trust by protecting digital information, users and national systems from potential attacks.
Muchanga urged universities to focus on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and innovation while taking a greater role in managing the Education and Research Network (MoRENet), which connects academic institutions across the country.
The newly inaugurated data centre is equipped with advanced security systems, environmental monitoring, backup infrastructure and power support from electricity, solar energy and a generator. UEM Rector Manuel Guilherme Júnior said the facility would improve data hosting, service continuity and cybersecurity, but noted that it would require continuous investment and effective management.
