Tanzania’s Vice President, Emmanuel Nchimbi, has resigned after concluding that President Samia Suluhu Hassan wanted a change in the country’s second-highest office.
Nchimbi submitted his resignation on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, and requested that it take effect on 4 September 2026, according to the Directorate of Presidential Communications. President Hassan accepted the resignation, the Presidency confirmed in a statement published on its official Instagram account.
Nchimbi said he was stepping down to respect the President’s wishes, referring to an earlier commitment to resign if she preferred a different vice president. He said he was “convinced beyond doubt that the president desires change”. The presidency said constitutional procedures would be followed to appoint another vice president.
