Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has called for responsible management of the country’s diversity, warning that failure to do so could weaken social cohesion and fuel division, violence and extremism.
President Ghazouani made the remarks on Monday, September 14, 2026, at the opening of the 39th International Congress on the Life of the Prophet in Nouakchott.
He said diversity and differences should be harnessed as sources of enrichment, complementarity and national strength rather than allowed to undermine unity.
The President stressed the need to promote equality in dignity, fraternity, solidarity, justice, fairness and acceptance of others, while ensuring that these principles are reflected in public institutions, administration and everyday relations.
He said his Government was working to strengthen dialogue and consultation, respect differing opinions, uphold shared national values and reinforce institutions and the rule of law. President Ghazouani also identified social justice and the fight against poverty and exclusion as critical to strengthening social cohesion and national unity.
He reaffirmed his commitment to building a peaceful society in which citizenship and respect for shared values take precedence, while Mauritania draws strength from its diversity to advance its national aspirations.
