A report published on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, by the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa linked 284 properties in the United States, worth about $271 million, to 61 current and former senior Nigerian officials.
The investigation examined purchases made since the end of military rule in 1999. It found that more than half the properties were acquired while the officials held office, and that most were bought without mortgages.
The organization said those purchases raised concerns about possible money laundering, but a property link or purchase alone does not establish wrongdoing.
The report also identified 39 of the 61 officials as having previously faced public corruption allegations, charges or convictions. It said officials from the security sector accounted for the largest number of properties and raised concerns about oversight of defence spending.
