Togo has extended Tuesday for 12 months (until September 16, 2022) the state of health emergency following the upsurge of new cases of coronavirus in recent weeks.
The government had requested a six-month extension. The National Assembly unanimously approved the request, but gave it 12 months to “properly conduct the fight against the pandemic”.
For the National Assembly, this measure is part of the fight against the virus.
“The particular context, which exceeds the framework of the current management of the State, requires that we have all the tools to make appropriate decisions and react promptly and act effectively to protect the population,” said Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé.
Some Togolese, like Dr. Agbéyome Messan Kodjo, believe that this measure is done “in disregard of the unfortunate consequences for Togo […] to cover the illegitimacy of the shipwrecked
.
Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé called on the population to “massively” adhere to the vaccination campaign, which started on March 10. “The doses of vaccine are available, everyone should do their part,” she said.
