The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló has presented on Monday July 31 the project to modernize the port of Bissau, which he considered essential for the country’s development.
“The ceremony marks a decisive moment in the construction and development of Guinea-Bissau. It is the launch of the largest harbor project ever undertaken in our country,” said the Guinean Head of State.
The project to rehabilitate the infrastructure and modernize the equipment of the port of Bissau is co-financed by the West African Development Bank, the Bank of West Africa and the Guinea-Bissau Ports Administration. The financing agreement, worth 23 billion francs (€35 million), was signed in November 2022 in Lomé, Togo.
“This is an example of sub-regional cooperation. Indeed, it is thanks to this dynamic of South-South cooperation that it has become possible for us to launch this project, the development of which is crucial for the development of the country”, emphasized Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
The project provides for the extension of the berth, dredging of the port, the maneuvering basin and access channel, maritime signaling, as well as the acquisition of modern equipment for port operations.
“I have no doubt about the added value, that is, the socio-economic impact of this project, not only by increasing the volume of imports and exports, but also by gaining efficiency in services, as well as by creating jobs”, the Guinean President stressed.
