Cape Verde’s port management company (Enapor) will invest 937,000 euros to refurbish the cabotage quay at the Port of Praia, and the work is expected to be completed within eight months. It was announced on Tuesday November 28.
According to the award made today to the construction company, the contract consists of rehabilitation work on the floors and crown beams of the mooring jetties at the Port of Praia’s cabotage pier, allowing the space to be brought into line with the Port’s new Land Redevelopment Plan.
In Cape Verdean government the document, it is stated that the work is intended to provide a “brief overview” of the geostrategy of this infrastructure, which is located on the country’s largest and most populous island, with more than 260,000 inhabitants.
“The Port of Praia, on the island of Santiago, is one of the main ports in Cape Verde’s port system, playing the dual role of asserting itself in the world and driving the country’s economic and social development as a gateway to its capital city. The Port of Praia is a multipurpose, versatile and safe port,” the statement said.
With an infrastructure that guarantees the operation of any type of ship, the work also aims to “improve the quality of traffic of people and equipment within the cabotage quay, as well as the safety of users and boost Cape Verde’s economic development”.
The work, carried out by contractor Armando Cunha, is budgeted at around 104 million escudos (937,000 euros) and should be completed within eight months.
The act of consigning the works was presided over by the Minister of the Sea Abraão Vicente, who stressed that they will improve the docking conditions for ships and make it easier for passengers to move around the port, while there is no maritime terminal in the infrastructure.
