According to the Cape Verdean weekly Al Semena information, Cape Verde is expected to launch new banknotes of 500 and 5,000 escudos. . The Banco de Cabo Verde will introduce these banknotes during the month of January 2015.
These first to honor Cape Verdean figures in the fields of literature, music, and politics. The 200-escudo note is printed on polymer, whereas the other denominations are on paper substrate. They will thus reinforce those of 200, 1,000 and 2,000 escudos already in circulation in the country since December 2014.
The new notes, which should soon be available in ATMs, are carrying effigies of famous people who have animated the political and cultural life of Cape Verde.
Among these effigies, are those of Aristide Pareira, first president, who held office between 1971 and 1995 also the writer Henrique Teixeira de Sousa, and also the composer and musician Gregório Vaz. Cesaria Evora, Cape Verde’s most famous singer, who died on the 17th December, 2011, is pictured on the new 2,000-escudo banknote.
