Somalia Executes Two Soldiers for Assassinating Commander in Al Shabab Plot

Two Somali soldiers convicted of conspiring with the militant group Al Shabab to assassinate their battalion commander were executed by firing squad on Monday, August 11, military Court officials confirmed. The soldiers were sentenced to death in August 2025, after being found guilty of killing Commander Aided Mohamed Ali in July.
According to prosecutors, one soldier obtained the explosive device while the other planted it under the commander’s bed, where it was later detonated remotely. Supreme Military Court chairman Liban Ali Yarrow warned that anyone proven to have links with terrorists would face the same fate, vowing decisive action against collaborators. The executions follow the killing of three Al Shabab members last week, also by firing squad, after they were found guilty of multiple murders in Mogadishu. The sentences reflect the Somali government’s continued hard-line stance against insurgents and those aiding them.
