RSF Drone Strikes Trigger Major Blackout in Sudan’s Capital

Drone attacks by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck several sites across Khartoum state, causing widespread power outages, according to local reports on Tuesday, September 8.

Eyewitnesses said the strikes targeted the Wadi Seidna military zone and the Al-Markhiyat electricity substation in Omdurman, where footage showed transformers engulfed in flames. Other reported targets included a military factory in Khartoum’s Al-Kalakla district and the Al-Jaili area, home to Sudan’s main oil refinery. No casualties were reported.

The strikes follow intensified military operations by the Sudanese Army in Kordofan aimed at breaking the RSF siege on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. El Fasher, a vital humanitarian hub, has faced heavy fighting since May 2024 despite international warnings. The RSF and the army have been locked in a power struggle since April 2023, a conflict that has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 15 million, with researchers warning the real death toll may be closer to 130,000.
