The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) has officially nominated over the week-end Domingos Simoes Pereira as its presidential candidate for Guinea-Bissau’s upcoming election, scheduled for November 23.
Pereira, who was the sole candidate, won overwhelming support from the party’s Central Committee, securing 359 out of 370 votes, with only nine opposed and two ballots declared null.
This is the second time Pereira has been selected to represent the PAIGC in a presidential race, having previously run in the 2019 election, which was won by current President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. As Embalo seeks a second term, the stage is now set for a renewed political showdown between the two prominent figures in Guinea-Bissau’s political landscape.
