South Sudan’s armed opposition group, the SPLA-IO, says it captured a Government military barracks in Bari village, about 15 kilometres southeast of Mundri, on Monday, 12 October 2026.
The group said fighters under former Western Equatoria governor Alfred Futuyo Karaba launched the attack at approximately 5:30 a.m. It also claimed Futuyo had ordered attacks on government positions across the state and instructed his forces to prevent elections from taking place there.
Residents reported heavy gunfire, while Sudans Post received reports that wounded soldiers had been taken to Mundri. Casualty figures and the opposition’s claim of control could not be independently verified. Government military spokesman Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang did not respond to the outlet’s request for comment.
The fighting follows heightened tensions since Futuyo’s dismissal as governor in February 2025, despite the 2018 revitalised peace agreement. The latest clash raises further security concerns ahead of elections scheduled for December 2026.
