Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday, December 18, assured citizens that the country’s forthcoming general elections would be free and fair, calling on voters to participate in large numbers as the Jan. 15 polling approaches.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Rakai District in Uganda’s Central Region, Museveni, who is seeking re-election, said maintaining peace remains the government’s foremost priority and the bedrock of national development. He pledged that voters would be allowed to cast their ballots freely, stressing that security agencies were fully prepared to safeguard calm before, during and after the elections.
The President credited Uganda’s relative stability to the rejection of sectarian politics, a disciplined national Army and resilient State institutions, while cautioning that political unrest could reverse economic and social progress, as witnessed in other countries.
