The World Food Programme (WFP) provided humanitarian assistance to more than 600,000 people across Mozambique in October and November, delivering 2,365 tonnes of food alongside cash transfers worth $2.3 million (€1.9 million), according to a UN agency report released on 30 Dec 2025.
The intervention was primarily driven by the deepening displacement crisis in northern Mozambique, where sustained terrorist violence in Cabo Delgado has expanded into neighbouring Nampula province, triggering fresh waves of population movement and compounding an eight-year conflict.
In response to new displacement in Nampula, WFP supported 10,220 people through emergency food assistance under a joint programme with UN partners, while preparations continue to extend support to additional displaced communities. In Cabo Delgado, the November–December food assistance cycle concluded on 18 November, reaching about 436,640 people across 87,328 households.
Beyond immediate food relief, WFP coordinated with local authorities to align seed distribution and conservation agriculture training in conflict-affected districts such as Mocímboa da Praia, Ancuabe and Macomia, strengthening livelihoods and long-term resilience. Emergency nutrition support was also scaled up, with more than 8,300 children under five and pregnant or breastfeeding women assisted in Cabo Delgado and Nampula.
During the same period, WFP provided technical support to government-led initiatives aimed at improving food security, climate resilience and livelihoods, including agricultural climate services training in Nampula. Protection activities featured support for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, alongside efforts to enhance women’s financial inclusion and community climate resilience.
In November alone, over 14,000 farmers received weather forecasts, 1,700 underwent training, and hundreds of families benefited from seeds, storage facilities and food processing kits, with women comprising 45% of beneficiaries. School feeding programmes in Tete, Nampula and Cabo Delgado reached nearly 95,000 students, while drought response linked to El Niño concluded in Sofala province.
WFP estimates that approximately $115 million (€97.6 million) in additional funding will be required to sustain humanitarian operations in Mozambique through 26 May 2026, underscoring the scale and persistence of the crisis.

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries after being involved in a fatal road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in south-west Nigeria, authorities have confirmed, on 29 December.
The crash occurred on Monday morning on the busy highway linking Lagos and Ogun states. According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), a Lexus jeep carrying five adult men lost control while overtaking at high speed and collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside. Two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, while two others escaped unhurt. Joshua, 36, who was seated in the back of the Lexus, was rescued alive and taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police say he is in a stable condition.
The incident happened near Sagamu in Ogun State, where Joshua has family roots. An eyewitness reported that Joshua’s security detail was travelling in a separate vehicle behind the Lexus at the time of the crash.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the fatalities and ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with excessive speed cited as the likely cause. Authorities say further updates will be provided once investigations are concluded. Joshua has been in Nigeria following his recent bout with Jake Paul on 19 December.

On December 26, 2025, the Ghana Formed Police Unit (GHFPU 1, Rotation 9) carried out a medical outreach programme in Bieh, Guit County, South Sudan, as part of its peacekeeping mandate under UNMISS, the Mission officials reported on 29 December. The initiative provided essential medical supplies and care to residents during the festive season, strengthening community relations.
The exercise was led by UNMISS officials, including Acting Field Office Police Coordinator Anke Lute, alongside personnel from the FPU Coordination Office in Bentiu. The Ghanaian contingent was headed by Deputy Commanding Officer, Chief Superintendent Rosina Adwoa Donkor Gariba, who conveyed goodwill messages on behalf of the Contingent Commander and underscored the value of civil-military cooperation.
Local health authorities welcomed the intervention, noting that the medical supplies arrived at a critical moment of shortage, while UNMISS reaffirmed its commitment to community welfare, health awareness and security collaboration within its area of responsibility.

South Africa condemns Israel’s Somaliland recognition, backs Somalia’s territorial unity
Somaliland+Map+EDITED.jpg (1000×667)
South Africa has reaffirmed its firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, criticising Israel’s recent move to recognise Somaliland as an independent state.
In a statement issued on Monday, 29 December, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation described the decision as a breach of Somalia’s sovereignty and a potential destabilising force in the Horn of Africa.
Pretoria underscored its adherence to the African Union principle of uti possidetis, which upholds inherited borders as a cornerstone of continental stability. It drew a clear distinction between decolonisation and secession, warning that external endorsement of breakaway regions risks fuelling fragmentation and regional insecurity. South Africa further urged the international community to reject what it termed external interference and to rally behind efforts to preserve a united, peaceful and stable Somalia.

Angola’s Gas Strategy Gains Momentum as New Consortium Signals Pathway to Energy Security

Angola is accelerating its transition towards gas-led development as a strategic response to energy poverty, positioning natural gas as a stabilising pillar for power generation, industrial growth and economic resilience across Africa. A major milestone was reached in November 2025 with first production from the New Gas Consortium (NGC) project, Angola’s first non-associated gas development.
The $4 billion initiative draws gas from the offshore Quiluma and Maboqueiro fields for processing at an onshore facility in Soyo, with capacity of 400 million standard cubic feet per day and 20,000 barrels of condensate. The project came on stream six months ahead of schedule, underscoring Angola’s growing operational credibility within global gas markets.
Operated by Azule Energy, alongside Cabinda Gulf Oil Company, Sonangol E&P and TotalEnergies, the NGC marks a decisive break from Angola’s historical reliance on gas linked to oil production. By enabling dedicated gas supply, the project strengthens domestic energy security, supports downstream industries such as gas-fired power and fertiliser production, and leverages existing infrastructure through integration with the Angola LNG plant.
The gas pivot has been underpinned by policy reform. Legislative measures, including Presidential Decree 1/18 and the Gas Master Plan, alongside a licensing strategy launched in 2019, have unlocked new investment and exploration momentum. This culminated in Angola’s first gas discovery of 2025 in Block 1/14, reinforcing confidence in the country’s non-associated gas potential.
Looking ahead, international engagement is expected to deepen, with African Energy Week (AEW) 2026, scheduled for October 12–16, 2026 in Cape Town, set to connect investors, policymakers and operators to emerging gas opportunities across the continent.
Industry leaders argue Angola’s approach offers a scalable blueprint for Africa. As African Energy Chamber Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk notes, Angola’s gas push represents not just upstream success, but a strategic instrument in the broader fight against energy poverty, aligning policy, infrastructure and capital towards sustainable development.
