The African Union Commission (AUC) has expressed concern over escalating tensions in the Arabian Gulf following recent attacks on key infrastructure, warning that the situation could threaten regional stability and disrupt the global economy.
In a statement issued on March 9, 2026, Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the Commission is closely monitoring developments as assaults on energy and transport facilities intensify uncertainty in the region. He noted that the incidents are disrupting supply chains and could have far-reaching consequences for international trade and global energy markets.
Youssouf condemned violations of international law and urged all parties to exercise restraint while pursuing diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
The AUC also warned that instability in the Gulf is already affecting Africa through rising oil prices, disrupted trade routes, and challenges in exporting perishable goods. Disruptions to regional airspace are also impacting African airlines and connectivity with the Middle East.
According to the Commission, an assessment is underway to evaluate the potential effects of the crisis on African economies, supply chains and trade flows, while also considering the safety of African nationals living in the region. The AUC called for the protection of civilians and safe passage for foreign nationals, including Africans residing in Gulf countries and Iran.
