Chad Commits 750 Troops to UN-Backed Anti-Gang Mission in Haiti

Chad has announced plans to deploy 750 security personnel to Haiti as part of a United Nations-backed mission aimed at combating escalating gang violence in the Caribbean nation.

According to the foreign ministry, the contingent—comprising police and gendarmerie units—will begin deployment at the end of March, with operations expected to continue through June. The move aligns with a broader UN effort to reinforce security in Haiti, where heavily armed gangs control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The deployment follows the UN Security Council’s decision to strengthen the multinational mission into a more robust anti-gang force, with a potential total of 5,500 personnel. The new arrangement replaces an earlier mission largely composed of Kenyan police, which delivered mixed results.

The United Nations reports that more than 5,500 people have been killed in gang-related violence and security operations between March last year and mid-January, underscoring the urgency of intensified international intervention.
