At least 28 people have died following a landslide at an illegal gold mine in Nambuangongo Municipality in Angola’s northern Bengo Province on Saturday, May 24, 2026, according to local authorities.
Police spokesperson Gaspar Luis Inacio confirmed that 13 of the victims were members of the same family, while two other individuals are still missing as search and rescue operations continue. Emergency teams are working to locate possible survivors trapped beneath the collapsed mine site.
Health officials at Bengo Central Hospital said three injured victims are receiving treatment and are in stable condition. Hospital supervisor Francisco Rodrigues noted that the patients are conscious, undergoing observation, and do not require referral to other facilities.
The tragedy highlights ongoing safety concerns around illegal mining activities in parts of the region, where enforcement remains challenging and hazardous working conditions persist.
