Guinea-Bissau Court Orders Opposition Leader Back Under House Arrest

A military Court in Guinea-Bissau has ordered opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira to remain under house arrest after he was questioned over allegations of involvement in plots to overthrow the Government.

Pereira, leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), appeared before the Court on Thursday, June 4, amid heavy security. The opposition figure has been accused of involvement in attempted coups in 2023 and October 2025.

He was initially detained following the military’s removal of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló on November 26, 2025. Although he was placed under house arrest in January, authorities have continued investigations into the alleged coup plots.

One of his lawyers, João Paulo Indeque, said Pereira denied any role in efforts to undermine the constitutional order and fully cooperated with the court’s questioning. “Domingos Simões Pereira did not participate in any attempt to subvert the constitutional order. He knew nothing about it,” Indeque told reporters after the hearing.

The case comes as Guinea-Bissau continues to navigate a political transition under the leadership of General Horta N’Tam, who leads the country’s transitional government.
