South Sudan’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has launched a nationwide voter and civic education campaign to prepare citizens for the country’s first national elections since independence in 2011, scheduled for December 22, 2026.
NEC Chairperson Abednego Akok Kacuol said the campaign will educate eligible voters on registration procedures, voting processes and their civic responsibilities while promoting inclusive participation.
He stressed that the initiative is non-partisan and will focus on reaching groups that often face challenges accessing electoral processes, including women, young people, persons with disabilities and internally displaced persons.
Vice-President James Wani Igga encouraged citizens to register and participate peacefully, describing a credible voter register as a key requirement for free and fair elections. The campaign will be implemented nationwide with support from civil society organizations, media outlets, religious groups, political parties and community leaders.
