A six-day United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD) meeting has opened on Monday in Nairobi, Kenya, to assess global progress towards the 23 targets of the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, aimed at halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030.
The 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-28) is examining priorities including marine and coastal conservation, synthetic biology, wildlife management and protected areas ahead of the COP17 summit in Yerevan, Armenia, in October 2026.
Nairobi will also host the seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation, focusing on biodiversity financing, resource mobilization, digital sequence information, benefit-sharing and capacity building. UN CBD Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker said the meeting is expected to strengthen global efforts to protect biodiversity from climate change, pollution, rapid urbanization and unsustainable consumption.
