The European Commission’s directorate-general for the MENA region has ranked Morocco among the two best-equipped manufacturing bases on the southern shore of the Mediterranean for clean technologies, while flagging several challenges, according to an industrial mapping published earlier this September and reported by Challenge.
The recently published report assesses the capabilities of six countries in solar, wind, batteries and hydrogen.
It identifies Morocco and Egypt as the two strongest Euro-Mediterranean manufacturing platforms, citing established industrial bases, logistics advantages and proximity to European markets.
The report describes Morocco as an attractive, export-oriented destination, citing its proximity to Europe, modern logistics and proactive industrial policy. The country has built capacity in transformers, electrical equipment, cables, solar water heaters and some renewable components, and is drawing new investment across the battery value chain. Its phosphate resources could open opportunities in lithium-iron-phosphate battery materials and green ammonia, while green hydrogen, backed by a dedicated regulatory framework, has become a key element of industrial strategy.
The mature automotive and aerospace sectors provide transferable skills, supplier networks and experience meeting international standards, facilitating the shift into clean-tech manufacturing.
