Sudan: RSF drone attacks cause blackout across southeastern Sudan

Sudan Electricity Holding Company says drone attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) damaged five power substations, causing a blackout across southeastern Sudan.

The strikes targeted substations in Singa, Al-Hawata, Al-Faw, Mashkur and Al-Junaid, disrupting electricity supplies to Sennar, Gedaref, White Nile and Gezira states.

The company said engineering teams had been deployed to assess the damage and begin repairs, warning that the attacks threatened the stability of the national electricity grid.

Sudan Tribune reported that RSF drones also attempted to strike strategic fuel depots at Umm Aliyla in eastern Gezira, but caused no damage. The facility was previously targeted in September, when a drone attack sparked a fire at a storage unit.

In Sennar, the State Government reported material damage to the Singa substation and injuries to members of its guard team. The attacks come amid intensified RSF drone strikes on fuel storage facilities and electricity infrastructure across several states as fighting with the Sudanese Army escalates.

The war, which began in April 2023 following disagreements over integrating the RSF into the military, has killed tens of thousands and displaced about 13 million people, triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
