On August 22, the European Union announced it will deploy a mission of 130 observers to monitor Mozambique’s general elections scheduled for October 9.
European Ambassador Antonino Maggiore revealed that this will be the largest EU observer mission to date. Observers will arrive next week and be stationed throughout the country to oversee both the pre-election period and voting day.
The mission aims to assess the election process and provide a comprehensive report to the Mozambican government and public. Mozambique’s general elections will include presidential, legislative, and provincial assembly races.
With over 17 million registered voters, including 333,839 abroad, the elections will feature 37 political parties. Presidential candidates include Daniel Chapo of the ruling Frelimo party, Ossufo Momade of the main opposition Renamo party, Lutero Simango of the MDM, and Venâncio Mondlane of the Podemos party.
