
The government of Ecuador has reaffirmed support for the Autonomy plan offered by Morocco for the Sahara under its sovereignty, saying the plan is “the basis” for the resolution of the decades-long regional conflict.
The supportive stand was expressed by foreign minister of this South American country Gabriela Sommerfeld during talks she held Monday in Rabat with Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.
Ecuador’s top diplomat praised the efforts made by Morocco to achieve a realistic, pragmatic, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue within the framework of the United Nations.
Talks between the two ministers focused on latest developments on the regional and international scene, including the situation in Africa and Latin America and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
They voiced attachment to the respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of States, hailing the convergence of views on regional and international issues of common interests.
The two ministers pledged to promote investment and trade exchanges. They also agreed to join efforts against global challenges including climate change, human rights, the blue & green agendas, food security, health…
The visit of the FM Ecuador to Morocco was crowned with the opening of an embassy in Rabat, a move showing the momentum of the Moroccan-Ecuadorian relationship.
Last October, Ecuador suspended its recognition of the so-called “SADR”, dealing another hard blow to Algeria and its Polisario puppet which continue to suffer diplomatic setbacks and international isolation.
Ecuador’s decision opens up a new chapter in relations between Rabat and Quito. It comes amid a growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and for its autonomy initiative described by the international community as the ONLY “serious, credible & realistic” solution to the Sahara regional conflict.
