The African Development Bank celebrates 60 years of commitment to development and resilience in Africa

On Tuesday in Abidjan, the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group marked its 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of dedication to Africa’s development, prosperity, and resilience.
The event, attended by Côte d’Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara, senior government officials, international organizations, AfDB executives, members of the diplomatic corps, and other distinguished guests, showcased the Bank’s impactful history since its founding on September 10, 1964.
President Ouattara highlighted the significance of the AfDB’s anniversary, expressing his pleasure at the event being held in Abidjan. He commended the Bank for its pivotal role in Africa’s development and its unwavering commitment to building a prosperous and developed continent. Despite numerous challenges, the AfDB has made substantial contributions to infrastructure development, economic reforms, and improving living conditions across Africa, with a notable emphasis on transparency and governance.
AfDB President Akinwumi A. Adesina reviewed the Bank’s achievements over the past 60 years, noting its growth from an initial capital of $250 million to $318 billion today. Since its inception, the AfDB has financed 6,575 projects across the continent, starting with early initiatives in Kenya and Sierra Leone. The Bank has mobilized over $184 billion to support Africa’s development and growth, reinforcing its role as the leading multilateral development institution in Africa.
